Biodiesel and the Environment
Biodiesel has been extensively tested and verified by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory, and many other researchers, both public and private.
A summary of the benefits of biodiesel in reducing vehicle
emissions follows:
Inside of school buses, for example, the use of biodiesel can reduce
airborne particulates by 5 to 15 times that of petroleum
diesel fuel. This particulate matter has shown to be a significant
contributor to child respiratory problems.
Biodiesel as a renewable fuel is net energy positive. That is, each
unit of finished fuel yields 3.2 times the energy required for its
production. These yields can be increased even further through new,
sustainable 3G technologies.
Biodiesel is biodegradable and breaks down as easily as sugar. This
minimizes any environmental impact in the event of mishandling,
accidents, or spillage. It has also been proved to be 10 times less
toxic than table salt.
Increased production and use of biodiesel also demonstrates America's
commitment as a global custodian of our climate, reducing pollution
and increasing quality of life, particularly in urban areas.
